This is a rare and beautiful pair of Arabian Horse Mare and Foal Bookends designed by Gladys Brown Edwards and produced by the Dodge Company of Los Angeles in the late 1940s. Dodge was a great art deco foundry that was known as "Best in the West". It produced art deco bookends from the late 1920s through the early to mid 1950s, using pot metal with a rich gilded copper bronze finish utilizing the great southwestern copper mines. Gladys Brown Edwards was a well-recognized horse artist and expert on horse conformation.

It is reported in Carolyn Martin's book, Gladys Brown Edwards - Equine Works in Metal, that these are modeled after Edward's first horse, a half thoroughbred mare named Tequila, and her foal by the Kellogg Ranch Arabian stallion, Hanad. Gladys Brown Edwards was frequently a contributor to horse trade magazines for much of her life and was well known in Arabian horse and American Saddlebred horse circles both during her lifetime and today. This exquisite pair of bookends can stand alone as great looking statues. Each bookend is 5 inches tall by 6 inches wide. They are in extra fine aged condition with expected patina and no cracks or breaks.

These vintage horses enhance any decor and bring out the best in us horse lovers. One of the bookends bears original felt and sticker. The other has replaced felt.

Each bookend is about 3 1/4 pounds, and, together, the pair weighs about 6 1/2 pounds. Thank you for shopping with us. We will do what we can to make everything right!
